Abu Dhabi is a grand city and capital of the United Arab Emirates that boasts plenty of top sites and attractions that the whole family will enjoy. The city’s oil exports are reflected in the sweeping skyscraper skyline and multiplex megacentres such as Abu Dhabi Mall.

Sprawling beaches and plenty of glistening blue waters await you in Abu Dhabi and you don’t even need to leave the city. Saadiyat Island has arguably one of the nicest stretches of public beach or you can explore The Corniche - the main promenade that runs between the city centre and Gulf sea.

One of the city’s main attractions is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. This stunning architectural gem is the jewel in the city’s crown and is renowned as being one of the grandest Grand Mosques in the world. The mosque is completely free to enter and there’s even a free 45-60 minute guided tour so you can learn more about Emirati culture as well as the rich historical significance of this magnificent structure.

Another top attraction is the Al Jahili Fort which is surrounded by verdant parkland. The main attraction is the spectacular exhibit to be found in the west wing. It includes photographs taken by British explorer Sir Wilfred Thresiger which focus on his crossing of the Rub Al Khali in the 1940s. The east wing contains a tourist information centre with knowledgeable staff and even some city maps to help you get off on the right foot.

Abu Dhabi is also home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Al Ain Oasis is a verdant oasis escape from the blazing Arabian heat. Amongst this sprawling 3,000 acre plantation you’ll find plantations housing almost 150,000 date palms - one of the country’s tastiest snacks.

Art lovers are sure to enjoy a trip to the Louvre Abu Dhabi which opened its doors in late 2017. Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel, Louvre Abu Dhabi boasts 12 world-class galleries that explore the artistic feats of artists from the Neolithic to the present day. Take a walk through the ages as you experience a journey through human heritage interwoven with cultural aspects.

Another of the city’s popular attractions is the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital. Falcons are of huge cultural significance in the Gulf which makes the hospital a much thought after and hugely needed facility. Whilst you’re there you can even take a look inside the examination room as well as seeing the birds in free-flight in the aviary. If you’re feeling brave and want to get a spectacular shot for social media these falcons will even pose for a photo! For a fun filled day out that the whole family will enjoy, why not take a trip to Ferrari World Abu Dhabi? Home to the world’s fastest roller coaster ‘Formula Rossa’, see if you’re brave enough to take on the challenge. Other popular rides include the Flying Aces roller coaster, another world beater boasting the biggest loop and steepest incline. There’s even a Ferrari Driving Experience where you can get a tour around the island with a fully certified company driver. If you don’t have a need for speed you can explore at a more relaxed pace by checking out a live show or car exhibition.

Abu Dhabi is also home to the world’s only Warner Bros themed indoor theme park. Inside Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi you’ll find 6 fully immersive worlds including Dynamite Gulch, Cartoon Junction, The Flintstones themed Bedrock and Gotham City based on DC’s Batman. To make the most of all the rides and attractions on offer it’s recommended that you spend at least an afternoon here.

If it’s shopping you’re after, you can get your retail therapy fix from Marina Mall, the city’s premier shopping destination. Shop til you drop with late night opening until 10pm and over 400 stores to choose from. The United Arab Emirates is home to plenty in the way of traditional marketplaces (souks) too so you’re sure to find something for everyone.

For a food fix, you’ll find plenty of restaurants in Abu Dhabi to suit every taste and budget. For a fine dining experience head over to Li Beirut and tuck into some classic tasty Lebanese mezze including moutabel (aubergine puree mixed with olive oil, yoghurt and tahini) and muhammara (walnut and red chili dip). Another favourite is the rack of lamb with zaatar (a tasty blend of spices including sesame, suman and hyssop) or if you’re feeling more adventurous sample the stuffed quail with green roasted wheat. If you prefer a more chilled atmosphere then head over to Sontaya and enjoy spectacular views out across the sand.
